Mechanical and analytical testing laboratory of Epoxy division accredited by Germanischer Lloyd

August 2012

The Application Development Centre (ADC) mechanical and analytical testing laboratory of Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) (Epoxy division) has been accredited by Germanischer Lloyd (GL). The accreditation is the first-of-its-kind in Asia and the recognition brings ADC in the league of top testing laboratories for composite materials.

As part of the accreditation process, the ADC testing facilities were audited by GL representative on the 26th and 27th April 2012 for high standards of testing expertise and professional competency. The ADC team had been working for the last one and half year with GL to meet the standards of and comply with the requirements for accreditation.

Approval from GL is mandatory for qualifying materials used in wind turbine blades and the GL accreditation allows certification testing to be carried out in-house avoiding the need to subcontract the work to other approved test houses.

Epotec Epoxy resins has a rich portfolio of products for wind energy applications and the accreditation will enable the company to expedite the approval of new as well as existing products with potential customers.

GL is a global certifying agency, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. It works in three major businesses — ship classification; oil and gas and renewables.

In case of wind energy, a blade manufacturer has to obtain certification from GL for the wind turbine blades made prior to their installation, and hence, as part of the GL protocol, any material used in the making of the blades also needs to be certified by GL.
