Sodium Sulphite

Marketed under the brand Birlasulf Sodium Sulphite (Birlasulf SS), sodium sulphite is used for varied purposes:

  • In the production of pulp
  • In the sulfidization of tanning extract
  • In the production of shampoo and trinitrotoluene (TNT)
  • An antichlor in water treatment
  • A moderate reducing agent in the production of chemicals and drugs
  • A preservative in natural latex rubber and photography
  • An oxidant, enzyme inhibitor, and anti-microbial agent in the food industry
  • As a solvent in the fibre industry

Sodium metabisulphite

Manufactured by Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand), sodium metabisulphite is marketed under the brand Birlasulf Sodium Metabisulphite (Birlasulf SM). It is used for a variety of purposes:

  • A preservative in fruits and starch, and as an enzyme inhibitor in melanin formation
  • An antichlor in water treatment, and in the detoxification of cyanide and chromate
  • A bleaching agent in the production of wool and jute
  • An antichlor in the production of paper and pulp
  • To destroy cyanide in gold mining
  • Important constituent for making developer solutions and acidifying fixing baths

Sodium bisulphite

Marketed under the brand Birlasol 35, sodium bisulphite is widely used for varied purposes:

  • As a preservative in fruits and starch, and an enzyme inhibitor in melanin formation
  • As an antichlor in water treatment
  • As a bleaching agent in the production of wool and jute
  • In the detoxification of cyanide and chromate
  • In the production of pulp and paper as an antichlor and a bleaching agent
  • To purify and isolate aldehydes and ketones, and to destroy waste bromine in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry
  • To solubilize tanning extracts
  • Important constituent for making developer solutions and acidifying fixing baths

Potassium metabisulphite

Marketed under the brand Vintage, potassium metabisulphite is useful in various industrial sectors:

  • To prevent the growth of microorganisms, and to protect colour and delicate flavours of wine
  • To remove chloramines and inhibit the growth of wild yeasts, bacteria, and fungi in the beer industry
  • To develop solutions and acidify fixing baths in photography and film
  • As a preservative and antimicrobial agent in the making of fruits, vegetables, shrimps, and prawns
  • In the production of vitamins and pharmaceutical intermediates
